As per the new research by an environment think tank, Ember Electricity demand and Carbon dioxide emissions are about 5% more than times before the outbreak of the pandemic.
The findings mention a failure of nations to achieve a green recovery. It is essential to shift away from fossil fuels toward renewable energy to avoid the worst consequences of climate change.
The report by an environmental think tank shows that more than 60% of the world’s electricity generation is still coming from fossil fuels in 2020.
The study warned that the world’s transition from coal power is happening very slowly. Emissions from coal contribute to almost 30% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.
“Progress is nowhere near fast enough. Despite coal’s record drop during the pandemic, it still fell short of what is needed,” Ember lead analyst Dave Jones said in a statement.
Jones expressed that coal power usage should reduce by almost 80% by the end of 2030 to avoid highly dangerous global warming levels.
“We need to build enough clean electricity to simultaneously replace coal and electrify the global economy. World leaders have yet to wake up to the enormity of the challenge.” Jones said.
