The announcement builds on the $12 billion investment that TSMC has already committed
The largest contract chipmaker in the world and a significant supplier to Apple Inc., TSMC, announced on Wednesday that it was erecting a structure in Arizona, in the United States, that could house a second chip factory.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd said in an email to Reuters that while it has not yet made a final decision regarding constructing a second chip manufacturing plant, it may use the building for future expansion.
The company stated, “Based on operating efficiency and cost economic considerations, we will consider adding more capacity in Arizona with a second fab in light of the strong customer demand we are seeing in TSMC’s advanced technology.”
TSMC committed to investing in Arizona two years ago, and The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on this, citing sources.
