It was a chaotic weekend for Americans traveling by air on this weekend where almost 4,800 flights got cancelled. Although the disruptions eased from the rocky start to Memorial Day weekend.
Delta Air Lines led cancellations and is most affected with more than 400 flights got cancelled due to bad weather and “air traffic control actions”. Other flights operated by Republic Airways, United Airlines, JetBlue and American Airlines were also delayed Saturday.
“More than any time in our history, the various factors currently impacting our operation — weather and air traffic control, vendor staffing, increased COVID case rates contributing to higher-than-planned unscheduled absences in some work groups —are resulting in an operation that isn’t consistently up to the standards Delta has set for the industry in recent years,” said Allison Ausband – Chief Customer Experience Officer in an online post.
Delta expected 2.5 million people to be flying during the weekend – up 25% from last year. Eventually it cancelled 254 mainline flights, and 530 flights got delayed. Other airline companies have also pared back schedules to better handle disruptions like bad weather and staffing shortages.
