Sunday saw TikTok’s head of policy in the US, Michael Beckerman responded to allegations made by FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr that TikTok was not just a short-video entertainment app but a security threat for US users. Carr said that according to some reports and recent developments there are concerns that TikTok’s US user data is being accessed by the Chinese government. Beckerman, however, denied the allegations saying that the claims that TikTok is collecting browser history are ‘simply false’. He also stated that “we have never shared information with the Chinese government, nor would we” adding that TikTok was not a security threat, and they have US-based security teams.
Beckerman also responded to an allegation that China was using use TikTok to ‘influence Americans commercial, cultural or political behavior.’ He said that the app doesn’t allow any political ads on the platform and any harmful content that may be shown is a problem for the internet as a whole. “It’s something that we’ve worked really hard on to eliminate our platform anything that’s dangerous or harmful, violates our community guidelines.”
